In 1977 the Mitchell Lion\u2019s Club and the Mitchell & District Kinsmen started a community\u00a0event in Mitchell, Ontario named \u2018Cornfest\u2019. After a successful first year, some of the Lion\u2019s\u00a0Club members approached Mike Uniac and Dave Chessell at the local coffee shop asking if\u00a0the Grizzlies would like to enhance the annual event by adding a slo-pitch tournament. The\u00a0Grizzlies liked the idea and took the opportunity to set up an 8 team Men\u2019s tournament. In 1978 the\u00a0Mitchell Coyotes were crowned the inaugural Cornfest Slo-Pitch champions with an 8-7 victory\u00a0over Stratford Lloyd\u2019s Electric. The following year,\u00a0the tournament expanded to 16 Men\u2019s\u00a0teams, and in 1992 a Women\u2019s division was added. The event has continued to evolve to\u00a0what now includes near 60 teams spread over Men\u2019s Open & Recreational and Women\u2019s Open &\u00a0Recreational divisions.<\/p>\n
The Mitchell Grizzlies Cornfest Slo-Pitch tournament takes place on the 3rd weekend of August\u00a0each year and has become a fixture within Mitchell and the surrounding community. The event\u00a0is now one of the most competitive and respected slo-pitch tournaments in Ontario, drawing\u00a0teams from across Ontario, including a few teams from Indianapolis, Indiana over the years.\u00a0Through a lot of hard work and dedication, the Grizzlies have been able to maintain the long\u00a0standing success of the Cornfest Slo-Pitch tournament. Proceeds are donated within the\u00a0community, with special interest given to the Minor Sports Associations and the community\u00a0sporting facilities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
